America's Most Stolen Cars

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to targeting vehicles, thieves are thinking big.  There's a new list out of which vehicles are more likely to be stolen, and SUVs and pickup trucks top the list.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety analyzed insurance claims for theft involving newer vehicles. The Cadillac Escalade came in at number one.   It's alluring not just for what thieves can drive away with, but what they might walk away with.   IIHS's Kim Hazelbaker says, "The wheels are gone, the interior -- the very expensive interior-- perhaps with the video players, the head restraints and all of that -- that's been taken out, and all that's left is pretty much the shell of the vehicle."

Also on the list... big pickups like the Ford f-250 and the Chevy Silverado.  They may not seem like flashy targets, but sometimes, it's what's inside that counts.  "Some of those thefts are doubtless equipment or very expensive tool sets out of the back," says Hazelbaker.

Here's a list of the top 10 stolen vehicles in Tulsa:

  1. Honda Accord
  2. Chevrolet Silverado
  3. Ford Explorer
  4. Chevrolet Tahoe
  5. Chevrolet Caprice
  6. Dodge Ram
  7. Ford F-150
  8. Honda Civic
  9. Chevrolet Cavalier
  10. Chevrolet Suburban

To decrease the odds of your vehicle being stolen, police say  it's good to have anti-theft equipment, never leave your car running while running into a store, and, we've heard this before... simply lock your doors.
