There’s no denying today that Sports is about Money. Money, Money, Money! Sports today is big business. No, it’s huge business!
Sports Illustrated just recently ranked the top 50 money earning American athletes based on their total on-and-off the field income. Number one, and this should come as no surprise is Tiger Woods. It is estimated that Tiger will earn nearly $112-million this year which makes his sports top money earner for a fourth consecutive year. And his yearly increases in income have ranged from 13% to 15% since this list was first compiled in 2004.
Along with Tiger’s incredible earnings in golf tournaments and appearance fees of $3-million dollars for exhibition events all over the world (a.k.a. Dubai) he is also the king of endorsements with multi-million dollar deals with Nike, General Motors, American Express, etc.,etc.,etc.
Behind Tiger, and this might surprise you given the current state of the sport but it is boxer. Oscar De La Hoya, “The Golden Boy”, is number two on the list at $55-million.
Number three takes us back to golf and Tiger’s number one rival and the second ranked player in the world, Phil Mickelson at $51.3 million. And here’s a stunning figure, the only American woman in this year’s top 50 list of sports money earners is Michelle Wie. The young girl, who hasn’t won an LPGA tournament and seems to be flaming, out is at number 22 on the list at $20.2 million!
Numbers four, five and six on the money list come from the NBA. Shaquille O’Neal ($35-million),Kobe Bryant ($33.7) and LeBron James.
It might surprise you to know that there are just 12 baseball players on this year’s Fortune 50 top Sports money earners but it probably won’t surprise you that five of them are New York Yankees.
The NFL has just five players on the list, all of them quarterbacks, led by the Indianapolis Colts, Peyton Manning who is #12 at $23-millon.
So if you’re looking to maximize your earning potential in sports head to the driving range and the golf course. It’s bigger bucks and a lot fewer bumps and bruises!
By the way, Tiger just added $1,350,000. to his 2008 total. That was the winner’s check for his sudden death playoff victory in the U.S. Open. His third Open title and his 14th in a Major.
