Local Weather Experts Discuss Climate Change

Recently I attended a meeting of the local chapter of the American Meteorological Society. Many weather experts from eastern Oklahoma were in attendance. The topic is the most controversial topic in the history of weather. Climate change, also known as global warming. Gary McManus from the Oklahoma Climatological Survey gave the presentation which included how climate change can affect Oklahoma.

Some of the information provided: There is no doubt that, on average, the earth's oceans and land masses have gotten warmer over the last 100 years, and it's expected to continue through the 21st century. However, why we have gotten warmer and how is the point of controversy. There is evidence that human activities have begun to impact the earth's climate through the release of greenhouse gases. The result is widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising sea levels. Ironically, the burning of fossil fuels may be responsible for melting much of the ice cap in Greenland which has exposed new areas for the exploration and drilling of..........more fossil fuel!

So how will Oklahoma be affected by this warming? Of course it's all theoretical at this point, but hot years and cold years will continue, as will wet years and dry years. The changes will be seen as averages over a decade or more. That could include a longer growing season resulting in crops maturing earlier, more record highs and heat waves and less record lows and cold outbreaks. Other affects could be an increase in droughts and wildfires, rain free periods will be longer but individual rain events will be more intense leading to flooding.

There's no question that warming is going on globally, but is it our fault? And even if it isn't, is there any way to slow it down?

I realize this is a topic that will ruffle a few feathers, however I welcome your opinions on the matter.

I have a copy of Time magazine from just over 30 years with a big warning on the cover about the coming ice age and it is going to destroy everything. Science stops when speculation begins...and speculation that man can actually make significant, widespread and lasting changes to the weather is pretty arrogant. When Mt. St Helens blew, more pollution entered the atmosphere in a matter of days than man has created in decades. So, if you believe global warming is mankind's fault (if that is even the case since the evidence merely points to normal long-term cycles), please make sure you can back it up with direct evidence that links man's activity to the changes...what?...oh, that's right, there is none. Governments lie...or has this been forgotten by everyone. Perhaps a quick history lesson is in need.

I know that computer projections about the impact of global warming have pointed out the regions that may be most detrimentally affected. Oklahoma and the Southwest in general are supposed to be high on the danger list. Expect slow desertification with increasing dryness and heat. The west coast is supposed to be the first to start running out of potable water.

So where are the areas that are likely to be improved? I think I want to encourage my kids to move there and buy lots of land. I'll stay here though. I'm old amd pretty likely to be toast in time anyway. Ha ha ha.

I firmly believe global warming is mankinds fault and it all has to do with our addiction of energy. I recently found out something about cars that run off of water (very eco friendly). This technology has been around for many years. If so then why are we still running our vehicles off of fossil fuels. I heard a saying that whoever controls the energy controls the people. I feel like I have been getting ripped off after finding this out. Can more research be done on these cars besides exploring on youtube. If these cars really work everything would be better for everyone (except the very rich oil companies and other people who could be profiting such as politicaians). Could we have been damaging our planet for the next generation just so others stay wealthy?

I also believe God makes the weather. But God also made people and people have made a significant contribution to the pollution of the earth and the air we breathe. The Lord has the final say but He does give us the freedom to make our choices. Too bad we have made so many bad ones. We could turn around and change what we have done to make our rivers, land, seas, lakes, streams and even the air we breathe healthier for ourselves and our decendants.

This stated, there have been over time more changes to the earth and the atmosphere then the scientists can count or even know. So before we TOTALLY blame people let us realize that the earth is like a living thing and it changes constantly. Let us just not CONTRIBUTE the wrong way to the changes.

daisy...

and God controls the temperature in your airconditioned house too? or is that you?

God gives man the ability to create and invent and imagine. He also gives man the ability to choose. unfortunately we have chosen to destroy one of His creations.

the whole point is moot! Noone in the meeting or reading this will be around in a hundred years to care?

Climate change may be the most politicized and misunderstood subjects in our lifetime. No doubt CO2 levels in the atmosphere are rising. That aside, the real doubts begin. To make a long blog short, the more I study this subject, the more I'm convinced that mankind is not the problem. Environmentalists have now take over the debate and have managed to instill fear in everyone that we're destroying the planet. Nowadays, every time there is anything unusual in the weather, it's going to be blamed on so-called global warming. They've even managed to attribute cooling temperatures to global warming (talk about a good PR dept). Take some advice, the next time you buy a new car, get one that gets better gas mileage, go plant a couple trees in your yard, recycle what you can, and try and enjoy life. The sky is not going to fall!

God is the only one who controls our weather the bible says there will always be seasons God makes our weather!

I saw an interesting special done by the BBC about this last year. In a nutshell, it suggested that the sun's radiation that is released over time increases and decreases in cycles, and reacting with the water vapor in the air, things cool down or heat up over time. Hence the "global cooling" scare in the 1970s. :) It's a natural phenomenon as far as I understand.

I absolutely agree that we should use our resources wisely. If anything good comes out of this whole thing, it's that we're aware that we need to take care of the planet we were given. Good! Nothing wrong with that. I hate seeing pollution - who doesn't?

I also think we shouldn't be quick to draw conclusions about things, and "consider the source". (Is a company that will sell "carbon credits" trumpeting global warming?)

If I were in charge (and I'm not), I'd suggest steps to reduce pollution, encourage recycling, etc....but not FORCE anything down people's throats. I don't trust entities that scare people into doing something.

It'll be interesting to see where we are in 20-30 years. In the mean time, I'm walking to the grocery store (unless it's over 90 degrees or raining!) and re-using bags, etc. Exercise is good anyway. :)

Of course global warming is real. Take Tulsa's pollution as an example, then multiple that by every city with 1/2 a million or more residents, This makes pollution. I believe global warming is just pollution that we have ignored for the last 50 years--if not longer.

Great blog post, Frank. I hope your conference was as fun as it sounded! Don't worry about ruffling feathers - just follow your heart. You are a great meteorologist.
