This is shaping up to be the winter of ice and thunderstorms! There is another storm system on its way towards the end of this week that can produce significant amounts of freezing rain, sleet and/or snow. It all depends on the track of the storm which can change from day to day. Arctic air will invade the area again by Thursday night (Valentine’s Day) which will set the stage for a winter mess as a storm system approaches from the south. This cold air will be what we call “shallow”, meaning that it will be mainly confined to near the surface while the air higher up will be warmer. As that warm moist air is pulled over the cold air by the storm system rain will fall and freeze just before or soon after it lands on contact. That means sleet or freezing rain (ice). However, if the storm system tracks farther to the south we could see more in the way of sleet and/or snow. Either way, unless things change, this is shaping up to be a major storm. Stayed tuned…..
