You've Gotta See This Video

I grew up in the Michael Jackson era and, while I knew he wasn't the 'inventor' of the moonwalk, a friend sent me a video that showed me the real roots of many of the King of Pop's dance moves and I thought you just had to see it.

In the video, you see the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr., Bill Bailey and Cab Calloway, all doing Michael's signature move decades before he performed it at the Apollo Theater in New York.

I know what you're saying. Yes, we all know Michael Jackson didn't invent the moonwalk. But, in looking at the video even more, you see more -- Sammy Davis, Jr. with his hat slanted down over his face as Michael did at the beginning of his Apollo performance -- another video showing someone (again I don't know who; we just see his feet) up on his toes like MJ.

Toward the middle of the video is another clip -- a man in a suit with a hat and cane dancing up a staircase. It's eerily reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" video.

Thank You, Goodnight!

Our friends at the Oklahoma Geological Survey in southern Tulsa County could have taken the hours between 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. off Tuesday night because there was a constant earthquake from downtown Tulsa with Metallica in town.

I know, you're saying "This isn't a webmaster blog". And, you're right. But, I thought since I haven't written one in a while, why not tell you about the great night had by all at the BOK Center?

This was the first stop in Tulsa for the kings of metal music in 16 years. And many of the fans in attendance weren't even born when most of the songs they played were written and recorded. But, I digress.

This was the third time I've seen Metallica. And, each time they get better. If you've never been to a Metallica concert, let me fill you in. If you've heard their music on the radio or on CD, that's what you get when you attend the concert. They are the masters at performing live music and doing it just as well as they did it in the studio.

With that being said, what you don't get on the radio or a CD is the interaction with the band. And, they do a great job of making you feel like you're a part of it. They feed off the crowd and the crowd feeds off them.

Metallica opened with a laser light show during the song "That Was Just Your Life", the first track off the new album, "Death Magnetic." They continued with track two, "End of the Line".

This is where longtime fans like myself were ready to hear some of our favorites. And, Metallica obliged.

"Since the folks here from Tulsa have shown up to represent, Metallica family, Tulsa style, here's some old stuff for you," Hetfield barked out.

The 'old stuff' included "Creeping Death", "Harvester of Sorrow" and one of the band's biggest hits, "One".

They cut back to the new stuff with "Broken, Beat & Scarred" (my favorite from the new album) and "Cyanide", but then returned to the great music that everyone remembers for the rest of the way, except for the first single from Death Magnetic, "The Day That Never Comes".

I have the set list below for you to see exactly what they played at the BOK Center.

The only complaint I had was that they left a few great songs off the set list. The songs I was disappointed I didn't hear were "Fade To Black", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Sanitarium" and "Am I Evil".

Of course, if they played what I wanted, they would have been there for about 15 hours. But, I would have been okay with that. I would have missed work today, but that's what sick days are for, right?

Another nice part of Tuesday night's show was a birthday bash for Kirk Hammett, who was celebrating his 46th birthday. During the encore, Hammett was silly-stringed and pie in the faced until he was completely covered in it. But, the consummate professional he is continued to play throughout it all.

After the concert was over, huge, black beach balls that had been released from overhead continued to be bounced and kicked everywhere as the band tossed every last pick and drumstick they had into the crowd.

It's been sixteen years since the band came to Tulsa. But, thanks to a new arena, hopefully it won't be another 16.

Set List:
That Was Just Your Life
The End of the Line
Creeping Death
