Residents Want Speed Limit Reduced Along Delaware

People who live in one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Tulsa want to slow down something else -- the traffic.
The speed limit along Delaware between 105th and 121st streets is 50 miles per hour. But, those who live there say the limit is much to fast for its growing population. Now, police have gotten involved.
Tulsa police have sent their recommendations to the city. Neighbors hope that works because, while the speed limit on the two-lane road hasn't changed in years, the neighborhood sure has. They've built a soccer field and new homes -- places where families are everywhere.

Police say the combination of the high speed limit and increasing population is creating an increase in serious accidents. Police want the speed limit lowered to 40, but that's not all.
"Obviously lowering the limit will help the severity of the collisions and hopefully the number of collisions," says Corporal Steve Wood. "But there are also things like the shoulders, there aren't any shoulders here yet, so it's almost like the population has taken over the roads."
Cherrie Stunkard has lived along Delaware for 30 years. She showed us the line of crosses that mark victims of fatality crashes. She says she's had to call 911 for several of those victims.
"People die," she says. "We have seen several people die right in front of our house. That's disturbing."
"I have been out here on a couple of fatalities myself," Wood says. "As well as a number of significant collisions where people are trapped for a long time."
Cherrie hopes the city makes changes quickly before more drivers get hurt.
"You never know what you're going to hear at night," she says. "Or the flash of light you'll see, not knowing what it is."
Police say Delaware isn't the only problem area in Tulsa. Corridors along 71st Street and 81st Street between Highway 75 and 33rd West Avenue are also experiencing the same problems.
