City Councilor John Eagleton supports a change "we are simply allowing people to pray in their religion, we are not favoring one or discriminating against any religion. "

If approved -- Council's opening prayer could be in the the name of any recognized religion. Christians could pray in the name of Jesus -- Jews in the name of Abraham -- Muslims in the name of Allah.
But not everyone agrees. Some simply point to the argument of separation of church and state. Greg Bledsoe opposes changing the prayer : "It offends my religious beliefs that prayers should be said in private and not in this state sponsored public forum."

Others who oppose the change like Councilor Jack Henderson worry about logistics.
"What you are doing is opening a Pandora's box and you might not like what you see. "

But the move had majority support like Councilor maria Barnes who supported the change "I think it's important to open it up to all regions to be fair. That's how I feel about it. "

And in the end most Councilors agreed. The measure passed 7 in favor 2 opposed.
The prayer policy that was voted-out tonight, had been in place since the 1990's.
