Tulsa - New December numbers show auto sales were the worst since 1992. Chrysler alone reported an amazing 53-percent drop from a year ago. And, because of that, dealerships are doing everything possible to get cars off the lot.
Some of the deals sound too good to be true. But, we found they are real deals that come with some strings attached. But, not the kind that make it totally impossible for the average customer to buy a new car.
From clearance pricing to zero-percent financing to thousands of dollars off, you name it and you'll probably see it at any local dealership. Hyundai just announced their new incentive.
"We guarantee if you buy a car from us and if anything happens to your income, we'll take care of it," says Joe Paliotta at Don Carlton Hyundai.
That's right, you buy a car and if you lose your job involuntarily, you get to bring the car back within the first year. In order to bring the car back, there are a couple of catches -- you must have made at least two payments and Hyundai will only refund the depreciation value of the car up to 75-hundred dollars.
"A lot of people are unsure about what's going to happen and they're pretty worried about making a major purchase like a car purchase," Paliotta says.
And, that's exactly why car dealerships are having to pull out all the stops, especially the big three automakers like Ford. At Bill Knight Ford, they have what's called "employee pricing, plus".
"That's the you pay what Ford employees pay, plus we have rebates up to 45-hundred dollars," Knight says.
Gary Faurie is hoping that will get him an F-150.
"Might be able to buy a brand new one instead of pre-owned," he says.
At Primeaux Kia, they are giving away up to 8-thousand dollars in rebates and zero-percent financing. But, there are strings attached with any deal.
"Let's be honest, if you're going to have zero-percent financing, not everyone is going to qualify," says Owner Henry Primeaux.
Other deals we found around the country include in Arizona, a dealership says buy one car and get the second for 99 cents. In Florida, another says buy a truck, get the second one free. And, in California, we found a deal -- buy a truck and get a scooter free. As the saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures.
