Tiny trucks that get about 40 miles per gallon would become street legal under a bill pending in the state Legislature.
The so-called mini-trucks have engines with about 45 horsepower and a top speed of around 50 miles per hour. The trucks are becoming popular on farms and construction sites but don't meet any classification the Oklahoma Tax Commission has for issuing vehicle registration.
A bill by state Representative Don Armes would define the mini-trucks in statute and allow them to be registered. He says he plans to prohibit them from interstates because of their speed.
Except for the size the trucks have the same features as other vehicles and are generally sold by companies that sell tractors and other farm equipment.
