Washington, DC - Oklahoma Congressman Dan Boren has introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives today that would seek to re-name a pair of facilities after former congressman Wes Watkins.
If the bill were to be signed into law, the post office in Bennington and the USDA portion of the Agriculture
(web | news) Center in Lane would be named after Watkins, who served as both a state senator and U.S. Representative.
"Congressman Watkins is a devoted public servant who served the people of his state and community with distinction," said Boren. "I am pleased to have an opportunity to honor his service with this legislation."
"Congressman Watkins was a mentor to me as a young member of his Congressional staff. He continues to be a positive influence on me, all who know him, and for many communities throughout Oklahoma."
Watkins graduated from Bennington High School in 1956 and from Oklahoma State University in 1960. After graduating from OSU, Watkins returned to work as an administrator at the university and at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C.
