Road experts and crews are beginning to repair Highway 20 after parts of the roadway collapsed between Owasso and Claremore.
The collapse took place as high water rushed under Keetonville Road. Today, The area around the collapse remains completely closed off.
An Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokesperson says a five-hundred foot section of the roadway and guardrail slid down the side of the hill. And it's still sinking. This is what happens when the road gets too much water in a short period of time.
ODOT officials warn the hill holding the road up is very unstable and the hill itself is developing more cracks. Ian Van Curen lives just above the highway.
"We probably got three inches in those two days," he says. "It was just pouring."
Ian says the road collapse doesn't affect him because he attends college in Tulsa. But, that can't be said for many others.
"The people that live in Claremore, that work in Owasso or Tulsa, it's killing them because they're going to have to go out of their way to get home," Van Curen says.
Ian says it was awfully quiet at his house last night because there was not any traffic noise coming from the highway. Motorists are being turned away from the area.
The Department of Transportation says there is no time table on when the road will be fixed. They say one thing is certain -- they'll do it as quickly as possible because up to ten thousand people use the road daily and need it open.
