Tulsa - A Tulsa non-profit organization is re-greening the city in a big way.
Up With Trees is teaming up with the Metropolitan Environmental Trust and Oklahoma Forestry Services to offer free tree saplings to Tulsa residents.
There are several species available -- loblolly pine, arborvitae, lacebark elm, bald cypress, several kinds of oak, redbud and more. The one-year-old bare-root trees can be picked up between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Up With Trees office at 11th and Boston.
"Although they look small, it's startling how fast they will grow," said Executive Director Anna America. "We have people every year who tell us they planted a seedling a few years ago and it's now 6-7 feet tall!"
American says some larger groups of seedlings may be available to school groups and to contact Up With Trees at 610-8733 to check availability.
In addition, a grant from the Apache Foundation is allowing Up With Trees to make larger trees available for free to area non-profit agencies, local governments and faith-based organizations to plan on their facilities. They'll be delivered on April ninth and can be picked up starting then.
To request trees for your organization, contact Up With Trees Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator April Woodul at
April@upwithtrees.org or 610-8733, or download an application from
