Lawton - A Hobart firefighter is back on the job less than two weeks after helping save three injured firefighters from a grain bin fire in Hydro.
Jack Eardman, Hobart's assistant fire chief, is being lauded for his actions during the blaze, which claimed the life of Hydro Fire Chief Nolan Schmidt.
But the 40-year-old says what he did wasn't heroic, it was his job.
Eardman was freelancing for the Weatherford ambulance service when the call for help came in. He was told one firefighter was down and then learned others were hurt.
Dressed in his medic scrubs and a pair of leather gloves, Eardman scaled the 40-foot ladder on the outside of the grain bin with some portable oxygen bottles in tow.
Once inside, he checked the firefighters' pulses and determined that Schmidt was dead.
Eardman fitted breathing devices on the others and moved them so that the beans wouldn't suffocate them.
By the time he was outside again, Eardman himself needed help.
He says he doesn't remember much until waking up the next morning in the hospital.
