The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals upholds an 18 milion dollar jury award to the parents of an infant who skull fractures at Children's Hospital of Oklahoma in 2005.
Court records show Brittany and Brandon Shinn were investigated for 24 days for suspected child abuse after nine-month-old Nathan was injured when a nurse hit his head against a night stand while changing his crib sheets.
Nathan's father demanded a doctor the day after the injuries occurred when he noticed swelling and softness around the infant's head. A CT scan revealed Nathan had suffered multiple skull fractures and a hematoma.
The nurse, Renny Jacob, denied any responsibility for the infant's injury.
Police and the Department of Human Services began investigating the Shinns after hospital staff reported Nathan's injuries to authorities.
The DHS later cleared the couple.
Police say Jacob acknowledged she caused Nathan's injuries after being asked if she would submit to a lie detector test.
Nathan Shinn died on December 14th, 2006, shortly after the jury verdict.
