For the survivors, Sunday was spent finding pictures, mementos -- anything the tornado didn't get. As the day went on, the governor flew in to reassure the citizens of Picher that they would be taken care of.
Picher, once a booming mining town, is now down to just a few hundred residents. Over the years, families have moved to escape lead pollution. Many of those left were in the process of having their homes bought out by the government.
The governor today made a promise that despite the damage, the people of Picher will not be shut out.
"The buy-out will continue and it will be done in an efficient and fair manner," Governor Henry said. "The details of how this storm impacts that will be worked out over the next couple of days."
"When I pulled into town last night, I thought, where's the ending," said Picher Firefighter Jeff Reeves. "You think it every time you look up and look down those streets."
