A city commission in Edmond is selling its stake in a statue of Moses to avoid any perception it's violating the separation of church and state.
The Edmond Visual Arts Commission has voted to allow private donors to buy its $8,700 stake in the $17,500 statue that will be installed near First Christian Church near downtown Edmond.
Attorney and church member Randel Shadid says he doesn't think there is a legal issue but that it's better for the commission to avoid the perception and any controversy.
Shadid says he's raised $4,500 from other church members and donors to buy the city's half of the artwork and to transfer ownership of the statue to the church.
