Kansas City, MO - A Vinita man is dead and his 14-year-old son is in serious condition after a suspect being pursued by police in Missouri crashed into their car Wednesday.
The Missouri Highway Patrol says 40-year-old Joe Nowlin died at the scene of the head-on crash, which took place on U.S. Highway 71 near Kansas City.
Troopers say 26-year-old Nicholas Schilling of Belton, Missouri was running from police when he ran off the left side of the road, crossed the median and slammed head-on into Nowlin's vehicle.
Schilling also died in the crash.
Nowlin's 14-year-old son, Cayden Nowlin, was taken by ambulance to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where he was reported in serious condition.
According to KMBC-TV in Kansas City, police were searching for a suspect in an aggravated assault when a sheriff's officer spotted Schilling's car and tried to pull him over.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
