"It's heartbreaking, every week heartbreaking, every Monday heartbreaking," says Joe Segura Jr. of Tulsa Animal Shelter.
For years now, surrounding cities have brought stray pets to Tulsa to be euthanized. Monday is the day surrounding cities bring unwanted animals and drop them off.
A truckload of puppies from Sapulpa. Kittens from Bixby. All will be euthanized within a matter of minutes.
Many small towns bring their animals here because they don't have facilities, but the manager of Tulsa's shelter says some use Tulsa's shelter as a dumping ground, which costs Tulsa taxpayers about $40,000 per year.
City Councilor G.T. Bynum will raise the issue before the council this week in hopes of increasing the fees other cities pay for this service and cutting down on the number of animals dropped off for euthanizing at the Tulsa Animal Shelter.
