Some state prison guards will be getting
bonuses as part of an effort to stop a high turnover rate.
State Department of Corrections director Justin Jones announced
on the agency's Web site this week that the guards will get a bonus
of $1,250 twice a year for up to two years.
The first three levels of correctional officers will be eligible
for the bonus if they have less than three years continuous
service.

The plan calls for the money to be included in regular payroll
checks at six-month intervals. If a new prison guard remains on the
job for two years the bonuses would total $5,000.
Jones says the department faces a critical problem in recruiting
and keeping guards and the bonus plan is an effort to keep them
from leaving.
He says the high turnover rate forces other guards to work extra
shifts and to work on their scheduled days off.
The starting salary of a correctional officer is less than
$25,000 a year.
