Five Cowboys Taken On Second Day Of MLB Draft
SECAUCUS, N.J. (OSU Athletics <http://www.okstate.com>) —
Pitchers Tyler Blandford, Tyler Lyons and Thomas Keeling and outfielders Neil Medchill and Micheal Dabbs each had their names called during Wednesday’s draft proceedings, bringing OSU’s two-day total of draftees to six. Andrew Oliver was a second-round pick of the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.
Blandford was the first Cowboy to be drafted Wednesday as he was taken by Seattle in the fifth round with the 143rd overall pick.
A hard-throwing right hander out of Owensboro, Ky., Blandford had a breakout junior season for the Cowboys in which he earned second-team All-Big 12 Conference honors.
Blandford was 7-4 in 13 starts in 2009 and tied for the team lead with 97 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .210 against him, which was the lowest among the Cowboy hurlers and among the best in the Big 12.
In his first two seasons in Stillwater, Blandford was 6-6 with a save and a 5.49 ERA in 24 appearances.
Blandford was also drafted in 2006 when he was a 34th-round selection of the Baltimore Orioles following his prep career at Daviess County High School.
Lyons was the first of three Cowboys to be drafted by the New York Yankees on Wednesday as the southpaw was a 10th-round pick and the 315th overall.
With a 19-8 record during his OSU career, which includes a stretch of winning 13 decisions in a row, Lyons sports a career ERA of 3.83 and was a second-team All-Big 12 performer as a sophomore after going 12-2 with a 3.31 ERA.
As a junior, Lyons was 7-6, tying for the team high in wins, with a 4.07 ERA. He was an honorable mention all-conference performer and was named to the NCAA Clemson Regional All-Tournament Team.
For the second-straight year, Medchill heard his named called during the draft as the Yankees chose him in the 11th round with the 345th overall pick.
Medchill has spent the last two seasons in Stillwater and been an All-Big 12 performer each year, earning first-team honors in 2008 and making the second team in 2009.
An outfielder from Oxford, Mich., Medchill has 25 home runs and 98 RBIs in an OSU uniform and sports a .339 career batting average and .620 career slugging percentage.
Medchill’s selection marks the third time he has been drafted by Major League Baseball. Following his high school career, he was a 30th round pick of the Los Angeles Angels in 2005, and a year ago, he was drafted in the 33rd round by the New York Mets.
Dabbs is coming off a senior season in which he earned first-team All-Big 12 honors after hitting .337 with 13 homers and 38 RBIs. He added a Big 12-best six triples and led the Cowboys with a .668 slugging percentage.
A native of Chandler, Okla., Dabbs spent two seasons at OSU after a standout JUCO career at Cowley County Community College. As a junior for the Cowboys, Dabbs hit .291 with three homers and 28 RBIs.
Dabbs is also a two-time MLB draftee. He was previously drafted in the 38th round of the 2006 draft.
A draft-eligible sophomore from Ropesville, Texas, Keeling was 5-1 with a save and a 4.41 ERA in 16 appearances in 2009. The southpaw racked up 73 strikeouts in 51 innings of work.
Keeling redshirted during the 2007 season and made just three appearances on the mound in 2008.
