Gov. Brad Henry (web|news) has appointed Antlers banker Steve Burrage to be the new state auditor and inspector.
Burrage replaces Jeff McMahan, who resigned in disgrace after his conviction on federal corruption charges.
Henry made the announcement at a news conference today, saying Burrage is the best person to restore public trust to the vital state office.
The state auditor's office serves as a watchdog for the financial dealings of governmental agencies.
The 56-year-old Democrat is a former chairman of the Oklahoma Bankers Association, a certified public accountant and a graduate of the University of Oklahoma.
He has more than 30 years experience in banking and accounting and is a member of the Oklahoma City branch of the Federal Reserve Bank. He is chairman of the board of First Bank in Antlers.
