A retired Tulsa police sergeant has died of cancer, ten years after he was given only seven months to live.

Sergeant Mike Garner died this afternoon. He had a passion for children's safety and was an integral part in the Tulsa area Safe Kids Coalition and helping NewsChannel 8 during our Buckle Baby Right car seat check-ups.

Earlier this year, Garner was awarded with the first annual Martha Collar Child Safety Award for Excellence.

NewsChannel 8 followed Garner during his battle several years ago in a series of special reports that chronicled the numerous surgeries he endured and his overwhelming will to live.

Our prayers go out to Mike's family during this difficult time. Funeral arrangements are still pending.
