The highway patrol is looking for the owner of a horse that fell out of a trailer while being transported along a busy highway.
It happened Sunday morning when a motorist reported a bloody horse standing along the highway. The horse was found a couple of miles past the Catoosa exit on Interstate 44 and was taken to a Claremore veterinarian who is now caring for the animal. And, now that the horse is recovering, people are looking for its owner.
Lesleigh Cash is the veterinarian who is taking care of the horse. She says while the animal is doing well now, it's lucky to be alive.
"Yes she is. I've seen horses that have fallen out of trailers. I've seen horses that have fallen through trailers. And, this the only survivor I've ever treated," Cash says.
The horse is responding to treatment and is slowly getting better. Dr. Cash says the fact that it may have been raining when the horse fell out probably saved its life.
"We had water on the road, so maybe she hydroplaned off. I don't have any other explanation."
Dr. Cash says the horse is a quarter-horse mix. She won't release the gender or the horse's age so they can make sure the real owners identify the animal. Now, the highway patrol is looking for the owner.
"There's no prosecution in this case," says Lieutenant George Brown. "The horse didn't hit anyone to our knowledge. There's no property damage. We only want to get the horse back to its rightful owner."
If you know who the owner of the horse might be, contact the OHP in Vinita at (918)-256-3388. The horse will be glad to be home.
If no one comes forward to identify and claim the horse, the veterinarian will end up paying the bill. Dr. Cash says she will then take the horse to her ranch until she can find it a good home.
