It's been a couple of frustrating weeks for investigators with the Highway Patrol. That's how long they've been looking for the owner of horse that was injured after falling out of a moving trailer.
The horse was found badly injured, bleeding, and in shock in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 44 just past the Catoosa exit.
The horse is still recovering at a Claremore veterinarian's office.
So far the highway patrol says they've had hundreds of leads on who might be the owner, but still no takers yet. It's frustrating.
Lieutenant Vern Wilson says, "We just want someone to come forward and claim the animal."
Lieutenant Wilson says the highway patrol will not prosecute the owner. They guess that no owner has come forward because they can't afford the veterinarian expenses. "That's a possibility. The cost of that whatever the cost and care of the veterinarian will exceed the value of the horse."
Dr. L. Cash-Warren says, "Everyday it seems is a little bit better. She's not on as many pain meds as she has been, her legs are starting to heal."
She says it takes several hours a day to changes the horses dressings, check it, and make sure it's still healing well.
The doctor says several people have come forward and offered to adopt the animal. But she says most cannot afford the medications it's taking to get the animal better. So far the cost of the recovery is in excess of $5000.
"It's one of those things that when you start it, I feel like you need to finish it. So we'll go on and take care of the horse until the injuries are healed."
The doctor says there's no time limit on finding an owner for the horse. She says she'll keep the horse until it's better and there's no time limit on that. She says she'll find it a good home at her place.
If you know who the owner of the horse might be please call the Oklahoma Highway Patrol office in Vinita. 918-256-3388.
