Tulsa - The first of our ten weekly player of the week nominees for the Ford Award is Booker T. Washington quarterback Eric Bennett.
Bennett racked up plenty of yards and touchdowns, accounting for all four of the Hornets' touchdowns in a 27-6 win over second-ranked Carl Albert last Friday. And, he did it in just three quarters of action.
But, the man who leads the defending Class 5A state champions is quick to spread the love around.
"Anybody on the offensive side of the ball, whoever touches it, can break one at any time," he says. "We can't really pick out individuals. It's a team effort. Everybody just has to do their assignments and we'll go out there and be victorious."
Winning is something Eric is used to. Not only did he lead his team to a state title last season, he's also a back-to-back Ford Award nominee.
"It feels good because I won it last year in the first week, too, so it's an honor," he says.
(Ruben) - "We had a little bit of bad luck last year because after you won it you got injured. Got to avoid that this season."
(Eric) - "Yeah, gotta stay healthy. Everybody on the team."
If Bennett does stay healthy for the entire season, there's no telling what kind of numbers he'll put up. That's why he's our week one Ford Award nominee.
Others who received submissions for the weekly award this week include Owasso defensive end Gage Dykes, McLain's Darren Cotton, Claremore linebacker Tyler Butcher, Sand Springs quarterback Johnny Deaton, Metro Christian receiver Ethan Roe, his quarterback Beau Marsaln, Booker T. Washington defensive end Ray A. Stovall, Jr., Salina's Darin Pettit, Union receiver Thomas Roberson and quarterback Chase Boyce and Lincoln Christian tailback Matt Lawwill.
