Tulsa - The group of investors seeking to bring a WNBA team to Tulsa has grown by two.
Scott and Katie Schofield of Washington, DC have pledged their support by becoming the latest investors to commit to securing a team. Katie Schofield grew up playing six-on-six basketball at Bishop Kelley in Tulsa. She went on to play college basketball at St. Gregory's and Oklahoma State.
"I never imagined when I was growing up playing 6-on-6 basketball that something even remotely close to a WNBA team would ever be reality in Oklahoma and that I would be involved in it," she says said.
The Schofields are very passionate fans of the pro and college team sin Oklahoma as well as pro sports teams in D.C., including the WNBA's Washington Mystics. They are also heavily involved in many cancer-related causes, including the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Oklahoma State's Coaches versus Cancer Campaign, the D.C. Leukemia Ball and the Friends Fighting Cancer Organization.
Both believe landing a WNBA franchise would provide inspiration for young girls in Oklahoma because of the quality of the women in the league.
"Scott and I are both so excited to support Tulsa in becoming part of this fabulous league and providing such great role models for the young girls in Oklahoma," said Katie. "After seeing how the Washington Mystics and the WNBA have been so beneficial to girls' sports programs and the community, investing in Tulsa's WNBA team was a slam dunk."
The investors may know by early October if their efforts are successful. Just yesterday, the group introduced former Tulsa and Arkansas men's coach Nolan Richardson as the coach and general manager of the possible team.
