Richard Roberts Responds To Students And Faculty Regarding Lawsuit

The President of Oral Roberts University is responding to a lawsuit filed against himself and the university by three former professors.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Tulsa County Court by Dr. John Swails, Dr. Tim Brooker and Dr. Paulita Brooker, claiming wrongful termination for reporting the university's alleged involvement in a local political race and also accusations of lavish spending by ORU President Richard Roberts and his family.
Roberts spoke to students and faculty during his weekly ORU Chapel:
"Had a pretty rough day yesterday. A pretty rough night. (Applause) Thank you. I felt that in line with the Bible, when Peter came back to his own company and gave a report that it would be good for me to make a personal statement. This came as a result of what happened last night. I tried to go to bed and I couldn't sleep. About two o'clock this morning, the Lord spoke to me and said get up and begin to write. And I said write what? I don't have anything to write. I'm empty. And, the Lord said get up and start writing and I will flow through your hand. And, I got up and I began to write. And after I wrote it, he said now share it with your students and faculty in the morning. And so, I took out a little pad and paper and started writing. Here's what he told me to say to you. 'We live in a litigous society. Anyone can get mad and file a lawsuit against another person whether they have a legitimate case or not. This lawsuit, which was filed yesterday against naming me, Lindsey, our family, Vice Provost, Provost and deans of the university is not about wrongful termination. It is about intimidation, blackmail and extortion. Make no mistake about it, this suit is about money, as most suits are. But, there is one problem. I am not intimidated by blackmail or extortion. This suit has been filed by an attorney who has over the years filed many suits against Oral Roberts University for more than, well multi-millions of dollars. And he has lost every suit that he has filed against the university. I have been down this road with him before. I know him far too well. Students I wish that I could tell you what I know. I am bursting to tell somebody what I know. But, I have been advised by our attorneys not to do that at this time. The Bible commands us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us and despitefully use us. And, I am doing that with all of my heart. Some may think that I might ought to hang my head in shame. But, I won't do that. I am confident that when the real truth is known, there will be no more questions. And my friends, students, faculty, staff and administration, that's all I have to say." Two of the three professors involved in the lawsuit worked for the Government and Humanities department. They say they were ordered by President Richard Roberts to get government students to volunteer for a local mayoral race. Then, they say the matter was covered up.
"My philosophy has always been that we don't do local elections," says Dr. Tim Brooker, who says that changed in 2005 when he says he was told by ORU President Richard Roberts to get students to volunteer for Randi Miller's failed mayoral campaign. According to the professors, thirty to fifty students volunteered.
"We were told quote, use all the resources at our disposal to help Randi Miller win," Brooker says.
He says he warned that such a move could hurt the University's tax exempt status. Someone complained and the IRS investigated. Doctor Brooker says he was told to create a report which excluded the university president's involvement.
"You have to create a narrative that leaves him out," Brooker said. "Well he was the only reason we were involved. So, from the very start I was instructed do not tell the investigators the whole truth."
He says he lied to the IRS, and later quit under pressure.
"He was definitely in my opinion forced out," says Dr. John Swails, who says he himself was fired.
Doctor Swails was a tenured professor at ORU and had worked there 14 years.
"I was determined to respond as a Christian, and a gentleman," he says. "Although the actions taken against me were neither."
Doctor Swails calls his firing an injustice. The professors involved in the lawsuit say they don't want to destroy Oral Roberts University. But, they had no choice other than to file the lawsuit. The lawsuit won't see a jury until two years from now.
