A parent claims there were many red flags before a Sand Springs school bus driver was arrested on a charge of sexual battery. It's a follow-up to a story we first told you about Thursday afternoon.
62-year-old Charles Degarmo was arrested yesterday after he was charged with sexual battery. He's accused of asking a 17-year-old student for sex. We found out today through the sheriff's department that two years ago, there was a complaint against Degarmo.
Kristyn Haley told her mother two years ago that Degarmo touched her buttocks.
"I don't know if it was an accident or not," Haley says. "I was just kind of scared because he grabbed my butt."
So, to learn that Degarmo is now accused of sexual battery with a 17-year-old student really angers Kristyn's mom.
"Yeah, I'm ticked off," Kim Haley says. "This could have been stopped. This 17-year-old wouldn't have had this done to her if they would have listened to me a year and a half ago."
Haley says she met Degarmo when he insisted on taking her kids swimming and to the movies.
"Because I was a single mom and could he take them to the movies sometime. And, I said you need to stay away from my kids."
She says Degarmo continued and she reported him. But, he never went away. Her complaint may have never made it to the top, but we asked Superintendent Lloyd Snow.
"That's something we want to know about," Snow said. "You start with that teacher or director and if you're not getting the kind of response, you can call me and we'll investigate it."
With Degarmo's arrest, the district says it will look into Haley's complaint to see where the breakdown in communication may have occurred.
Degarmo resigned from his post Tuesday, just hours after police were notified about the latest alleged incident.
