David Johnson was held to just 177 yards passing, but he did have four touchdown tosses as the Golden Hurricane steamed Rice, 63-28 Friday night at Chapman Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane improved to 5-and-0 overall and 2-and-0 in CUSA play by outscoring the Owls 42-to-14 in the second half.
But, instead of the high-powered air attack teams are used to seeing from Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane instead attacked the Owls with a running game that racked up 386 yards -- the second straight week Tulsa has eclipsed 300 on the ground.
Tarrion Adams had 112 of those yards while freshman Charles Opeseyitan added 94.
Rice, which had rolled up 77 points in a win over North Texas last week, did rack up some yards. But, Tulsa's defense forced four turnovers, including three fumble recoveries.
With a 21-14 lead early in the second half, Tulsa forced a three and out. Kyle Martens' roll-out punt was shanked into the waiting arms of Slick Shelley at the 25 yard line, and Shelley took it in for a score.
Rice never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Tulsa will now head into Saturday's game at Southern Methodist. The Mustangs slipped to 1-and-5 overall and 0-3 in Conference USA with a 31-17 loss to Central Florida.
