Tulsa - A new method of police patrols will save money for the city of Tulsa.
The river parks patrol fleet is using smart cars. They're very small, but they're very efficient. It's about half the size of a regular car, but this addition now gives the patrol officers more leeway in where they patrol.
"It's neat it's weird to look at it at first - it's a dinky little car." Richard Dreher Bicyclist
"Some... people almost wreck on their bicycle looking at us."said Park Patrol Allen Obert
Riverparks friends bought the 18-thousand dollar 2 seater smart car with donation money. It gives park patrol officers a street-legal alternative to an ATV.
"You never know what you'll come across"said Obert
This now lets Allen Obert cross Riverside drive and creep into a parking lot at 31st street.
"roll your window down. why is your pants down sir?"
Where the patrol officer came across this man in an SUV.
"you can't change clothing in a park - that's lewd activity... You can not do that...People walking by can see you naked and I walked up and saw you with your pants down. I'm gonna give you a break this time - I want you to leave the park - but remember this - do not ever come back to the park and pull your pants down in your car. You'll be registered as a sex offender." said Officer Olbert
The patrol officer didn't see exactly what the man was or wasn't doing just before stepping up to the window. But the man agrees to leave the parking lot.
"If it wasn't for this car - I wouldn't have been in the parking lot today."said Officer Olbert
The car also lets patrol officers get from 96th street near Jenks, up to southwest blvd faster because it can travel on city streets.
Four officers make up the Riverparks patrol, they're usually out here in the mornings and evenings - during the peak months.
Riverparks also picked the car for it's fuel efficiency. The three cylinder car gets a combined 36 miles per gallon.
