Tulsa, OK - The economy is a hot topic here in Oklahoma.  Many social service agencies say demand is higher than ever before.

We found on unique program offering help for people facing tough times and tighter budgets.  It's a partnership between area churches and one local ministry.  They've helped more than 4,000 people since 2001, but never has need been greater than right now and there is no end in sight.

This man's life is about to change for one very basic reason.  Dennis is about to get a bed.

"My air mattress was flat, it kept on leaking.  I finally gave up," says Dennis.

And Dennis is not alone.  Thousands of others here in Green Country are in the very same boat.

"People can't even afford food.  How are they going to afford furniture?" asks Chris Beach from Tulsa's Cornerstone Assistance Network.

Cornerstone works with area churches and provides free furniture to needy residents and that need keeps growing.

"This is all we have right now.  It will be gone in two to three days," explains Beach.

In fact, that need is so great, there is no a waiting list.

Beach says, "Not only are we putting out more than we did before.  We are getting behind for the first time ever.  It's the largest need we've seen since Hurricane Katrina and 200 families moved to Tulsa."

But these days, it's because of an economy spiraling downward.

Larry Adams, Cornerstone volunteer, says, "Either [they] lose their job or someone gets sick.  They can pay their rent, but they don't have finances to replace furniture."

Cornerstone depends on furniture donations to keep going.  Dennis appreciates this hand up.

"It's good, it's very good," he says.

Cornerstone Assistance Network accepts furniture donations on site and will even pick them up.  For more information on how you can help, or how they can help you, their number is 583-3670.

Places like Catholic Charities and area food banks are also experiencing record demand.  In many cases, it's from people seeking help for the very first time.
