Tulsa - An Oklahoma lawmaker wants to allow ATV's legal to drive our roads. his goal is to save you money at the pump.
State Representative, Joe Dorman is hoping to pass a bill that would make ATV's street legal on county roads. The off-road vehicles get great gas mileage, but they're also a cause of great concern.
The gas mileage can double or triple that of your car, but how well would they intermingle with cars on paved roads?
In the promotional video the riders look like they're having fun, but in today's economy, they might just be trying to save a buck.
“fuel prices are actually the driver on getting this study heard.”
Rep. Dorman's bill would make ATV's “You're looking anywhere from the 40 to 60 mpg range.”
“ I think what it would help is the people that would use it for local distance, I mean so many families live in the same neighborhoods.” said Josh Petty with Bass Pro Shop
“We're going to authorize for county roads but we're going to leave the authority up to the cities to determine if it would be a safe vehicle to use within the city limits.” said Dorman
“ It's the proverbial can of worms its gonna go further.”
Tulsa Police officer Craig Murray is not enthused, about even the slightest possibility that ATVs might one day be zipping through 41st & Yale.
“You're risking saving money in your pocket to risk your own life.” said Officer Murray
The bill will be filed later this year and will start navigating through the house in February of '09.
If the bill passes, Oklahoma would become the 4-th state to make ATVs street legal. Arizona, Utah, and Montana allow 4-wheelers on public roads.
