The Search For Todd Fox
posted 5:11 pm Sun November 18, 2007 - Aspen, CO
It's been almost a month since Fox Collision abruptly closed its doors. And, since that time, owner Todd Fox has avoided the spotlight. In fact, no one knew exactly where he was, until tonight.
NewsChannel 8's Burt Mummolo spent the past week on the road chasing leads and looking for answers.
He was last seen smiling in a magazine spread, touting the success of his 30-million dollar auto body empire. But, the smile and the man disappeareed when it all came crashing down. Customers were left picking up the pieces of their cars and employees were left picking up their lives turned upside down.

The health insurance of Steve Edkin, who was diagnosed with cancer a week before the shutdown, was gone. Then, paychecks one and two weeks old bounced.
"I don't know how the man sleeps at night," a former employee told NewsChannel 8.
He is sleeping with down comforters and plush pillows in a 170-dollar a night Marriot Residence Inn, the location of which NewsChannel 8 found after traveling 12 hours, three states and more than seven hundred miles to Englewood, Colorado.
Monday morning, November 12th, we found Fox heading north on Interstate 470. He was on his way to the airport and riding in style -- a 2008 Cadillac Escalade. Traced back to a Hertz in Tulsa, where they've been looking for it for two weeks.
We lost him at the drop-off. We searched the airport, but came up empty. Fox had disappeared again.
Unsure of his travel plans, we decided to hit the road again, traveling three hours west, through a light snow in the Rocky Mountains, to a shangri- la for the wealthy -- Aspen, playground of the rich and famous.
Aspen has breathtaking views and price tags to match, boutique stores on every corner, but not a single Fox Collision in sight. But, a familiar first name appears at 414 Hyman Avenue Mall.
Toddy's -- a business venture far removed from busted bumpers and dented doors. The store is a purveyor of fine leather wraps and blankets, and is opening soon. An ad for Fox's next business venture is already placed in a local magazine.
Back in Englewood, we tried the direct approach. But, the woman who answers the phone told us we had the wrong room. When we called the front desk, they put it more directly.
"Okay, so they don't want to talk to us?"
It's day five. Life in a Jeep is wearing thin and Mr. Fox is back in town. But, we lost him on the highway.
"I'm thinking he'll come back around lunchtime. Just a gut, just a gut."
Sure enough, the man who disappeared from T-Town finally appears.
"Mr Fox, could we ask you a few questions, sir? What do you say to your employees who have been left high and dry? Do you have anything to say sir to the hundreds of families? Is the strategy just to continue to run sir? What do you say, sir?"
He never utters a word. His priority is to leave. He flees the scene with desperate abandon.
"He almost hit my car."
His silence is still intact. But, his location is no longer a secret -- the Mile High City, with about 700 miles of trouble in tow.
And, perhaps in an effort to reduce some of the scrutiny, former Fox employees received a letter from Todd Fox on Saturday saying quote "Please be assured that I have not given up on trying to raise money to pay the final week's payroll." But, it does not mention trying to cover the previous two weeks which, for many employees, those checks bounced as well.
A class-action lawsuit representing 50 former Fox Collision Center employees is expected to hit the ground running Monday as a claim is filed for thousands of dollars in lost wages.
