Today, Lori Ensign, owner of Safari's Wildlife Sanctuary in Broken Arrow, announced the sanctuary will reopen for Thanksgiving weekend on Saturday and Sunday, November 29th and 30th from noon to 5 p.m. The opening is a benefit to raise funds for feeding the animals.
It comes a month after a liger attacked handler Peter Getz, who was hospitalized in critical condition following the attack and later died.
"These last weeks have been the hardest days we've ever experienced," Ensign said.
Ensign says after meeting with the entire crew, listening to fellow animal lovers and reading positive e-mails, they decided Getz would not want them to give up.
"Pete would not want our mission and his mission to cease," Ensign said. "We will continue one way or another, for him."
Ensign also announced that Rocky, the liger involved in the attack, will get to live out his life at Safari's.
