Tulsa - It's been nearly a month since the health department started vaccinating kids against H1N1. And, it's almost time to get vaccinated again. That's right, kids need a booster shot.
The clock is ticking at Limestone Elementary. It was 27 days ago today that they got their first doses. Now, school officials want to remind parents that it is time for round two.
About 150 kids received the H1N1 doses the first time around. But, the kids aren't out of the woods yet. For full effectiveness, a second dose is required.
"H1N1 does require that children under 10 get two doses of the vaccine, 28 days apart or it can be later than that," says Health Department Spokesperson Melanie Christian. "What we know is the first dose provides about 60-percent protection and then the second dose will boost them up to 80 to 90 percent."
Saturday morning, the Health Department will hold a free walk-in clinic for the swine flu vaccine. It's open to children from 6 months to 18 years, pregnant women and health care workers. It will be located at the Expo Square Exchange Center.
The vaccine will be given from 9 a.m. to noon.
Other clinics are also in the works: Thursday, November 12th from 3 to 7 at the Church at BattleCreek, 3025 N. Aspen Ave. in Broken Arrow; Thursday, December 3rd from 3 to 7 at Tulsa Community College West Campus located at 7505 W. 41st St. in Tulsa; and Saturday, December 12th from 9AM to noon at Oral Robert University, 7777 S. Lewis in Tulsa.
