"It seems things have been more on edge now than before the makeover," says Noel.
That's because the couple says their blessing has turned into a burden.
Their new hallway flooded, spray foam had to be installed to keep the water outside instead of in. The new wood floors warped and ripped up.
"We do feel grateful for what they've done. They gave us two additional rooms for everyone to have bedrooms. As long as it's not raining or flooding, we're just tickled pink. It is a little frustrating," explains Sheryl.
So frustrating, Sheryl wrote about it on her facebook page, even posting pictures of the a home makeover gone wrong.
"Some of the trim work needs to be done, door still hung on the girls bedroom. Wires in the laundry room hanging out of the wall that have to be covered," she says.
We sat down with the church's pastor Brian Bynum, who says they plan on fixing every problem.
"Our intention is to go back over and finish anything that needs to be buttoned up because we want them to be happy with what they're living in. Invite people over and enjoy the new space they have," he said.
He says the original plan was to redo one room, but instead they decided to do more and the rain that weekend really set them back.
Meanwhile, the Shearers are trying to look at it as another loop in the roller coaster that has been this past year.
Sheryl says, "I know that they're not going to leave us hanging."
From laid off to months out of work and now a made over home they're still trying to make home. It's just another testament to a saying that's practically become their motto, "There's light at the end of the tunnel."
"We joke about that a lot. 'There's light at the end of the tunnel.' I hope it's not a freight train; it wasn't a freight train," says Sheryl.
Since we shot this story, the church has gone back to lay new tiles, finished the wood trimming, and installed a door. But the chance of flooding in the new addition is still a concern.
Without that final inspection, without that permit in the first place, there is no record to show the work that has been done to the Shearer family home is up to standard.
Of course, this story isn't over yet. We promise to go back to the Shearer home when the work is complete.
