Tulsa - Oklahoma State has advanced at the NCAA soccer regionals, defeating Southern California 5-4 in penalty kicks Friday night in Santa Clara, California.
Freshman goalkeeper Adrianna Franch scored the go-ahead penalty kick, then blocked Alyssa Davila's attempt to send the Cowgirls to the second round, where they will face host team Santa Clara, which defeated Michigan State, 1-0 in overtime.
The teams were scoreless after regulation and two overtime periods, setting up the final showdown.
The Trojans took an early 1-0 lead when Megan Ohai scored, but Annika Neimeier was denied. Carson Michalowski scored to pull OSU even, but Chelsea Beuhning also put one past Franch to give the Trojans a 2-1 advantage after two kicks.
Whitney Wernimont's goal made it 2-2, then Franch came up with a save to keep it tied after three rounds.
Bridget Miller and USC's Karter Haug each scored in the fourth round and Elizabeth DeLozier and Marihelen Tomer scored in the fifth round to force extras.
That's when Franch decided to take matters into her own hands. The freshman goalkeeper lined up and booted one past the Trojan goalkeeper, setting up a showdown with Davila, USC's leading scorer.
Davila's shot went low and to the right and Franch laid out to smother it, sending the Cowgirl bench into a frenzy and the Cowgirls themselves into the second round.
The second round game against Santa Clara will be played Sunday at 6 p.m. Tulsa time.
