Washington, DC - The White House is doing some damage control after an investigation found inaccuracies in the government website created to track stimulus money. For one thing, it cites many jobs created or saved in congressional districts that don't even exist.
There was new criticism directed at the Obama Administration over the number of stimulus jobs it claims to have created.
More than 58-thousand of the jobs the White House claims were created or retained by the stimulus come from projects where no money has been spent, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office. That's nearly one out of every ten jobs claimed on the Administration's recovery.gov website.
And, ABC News has learned that the chairman of the board that oversees the
website admitted that they cannot certify any of the jobs data. The White House is vowing to fix the mistakes in its claims about how many jobs have been created by the stimulus.
Democratic Appropriations Chairman David Obey was outraged to find that a sewer project in his district claimed one hundred jobs when it in fact created only five.
"I wanted to strangle somebody," Obey said.
Congressman Obey is demanding the administration fix the errors.
"Fix the problem the blessed problem so that we're getting accurate information," said Obey. "I don't care what people's bureaucratic niceties are, or how hard it is to do it. I mean, they've got to fix the problem, so the American people can understand what the realities are."
Some of the mistakes are especially embarrassing. Recovery.gov claims nine jobs were created with a single $890 grant to Moore's Shoes in Campbellsville, Kentucky. In reality, the grant bought nine pairs of work boots.
Other mistakes include projects listed in Congressional districts that don't exist. On the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Vice President Joe Biden said that is simply because some grant recipients don't know their districts.
"There were bad civics classes for 70 people and they put in districts, what district are you in? No such district."
Later, Biden's spokesman said he misspoke. There were actually seven hundred projects listed in non-existent Congressional districts.
Head Start of Augusta, GA claimed 317 jobs with a $790,000 grant, but it was really just a one time raise to its 317 employees. Chris Whitley of Head Start says it was the administration's stimulus help line that advised them to claim 317 jobs.
"It wasn't illegal, immoral or unethical. And they told me to do it so I did it," Whitley said.
The Administration told ABC News they are working on fixing all of those errors.
