Tulsa - Tulsa law enforcement officials are breaking new ground in the field of cold cases.

They've created an organization to help investigators gather and share information on a global level. It's called the International Association of Cold Case Investigators, and they held their inaugural conference at OSU-Tulsa on Wednesday.

"Its already working and we're 2 hours into this," said TPD Detective Mike Huff.

He's a founding member of the association, designed to solve cases by opening up new channels of communication and information.

"Who do I call to help me in a certain problem?," asked Huff. "And most usually in law enforcement we're a very close-nit group of people, so by opening it up to these other entities we're introducing people to experts in various fields," he said.

"I'm the one who identified the bodies at the Murrah federal building," said Dr. Tom Glass.

A professor of forensic sciences, he's also a member of the group and an example of one of its main strengths - openess to those outside of law enforcement.

"This is a very open organization and it goes past departmental policy lines and allows people access to experts in the field," he said.

"We have the DNA which has allowed us to rule out I think probably over 2,000 possible usspects," said Maggie Zingman.

She's another member, one with a unique persepctive. Her daughter, Brittany Phillps, was murdered 5 years ago. The case remains unsolved.

"I want to get all the different people who are involved in these endeavors to understand the dynamics of a victim, what a victim brings to the event," she said. In addition, she also happens to be a trauma psychologist.

"What else beyond my experience as a surviving parent, what else can I offer in my own training to try and just help this process?," she said.

A first of it's kind collaborative effort, one that's already hit the ground running.

"In fact, we just linked up a forensic dentist and an OSBI agent out on one of the breaks that's gonna do some work on a case," smiled Det. Huff.
