Tulsa - David Noble's jumper with 1:21 left in the first half gave Southern Arkansas the lead for good as the Muleriders spoiled Southeastern Oklahoma's season opener, 70-64 Wednesday night in Magnolia, Arkansas.
The Savage Storm (0-1) led for a good part of the first half, including a 19-14 lead with 6:54 remaining. But, SAU went on an 18-to-9 run to end the half, including a 3-pointer by Chase Spruiell with 52 seconds left that gave the Muleriders a 32-28 advantage at the break.
The run continued into the second half with Southern Arkansas scoring the first six points to stretch the lead to double digits. The lead would grow to as much as 11 points before the Savage Storm trimmed it to four points on William Slones' jumper with 2:28 remaining.
But, the Muleriders hit all six of its free throw attempts down the stretch to hold off the comeback attempt.
Chris Roussell led four Southeastern players in double figures with 13 while Jordan Lee and Slones each added 12. Chibuzo Elonu had a double double with ten points and ten rebounds.
Justin Stuart led Southern Arkansas with 18 points.
Southern Arkansas was outrebounded 40-32, but forced 21 turnovers and limited the Savage Storm to just 40-percent shooting.
Southeastern will try to earn its first victory of the season when they take part in the Tarleton State Classic. The Savage Storm will face Angelo State Friday at 5 p.m. and Tarleton State Saturday at 7 p.m.
