Tulsa - With the auto bailout failing, we wanted to now what effect it has on local dealerships, specifically used car sales.
One dealership tells NewsChannel 8 they are filling up their lot just as fast as they are selling them. In fact, while new car sales for the big three are down, used car business is booming.
We found Kyle Turner looking for the perfect SUV -- a used one. Because right now, he's uncertain about the future of the Big 3 automakers.
"With the new car industry not getting this bailout, it's really putting a strain on the economy and you can always go and buy a used car," he says.
That uncertainty seems to be helping out used car dealers.
"We're having a really good year and a real good quarter right now," says Jack Flinn, assistant manager at CarMart.
Flinn says bailout or not, he's still in business for now.
"It shouldn't affect us at all, simply because we buy used cars," Flinn says. "Now, if they quit producing GM or Ford, then it would hurt us in the long run, but for right now, there's plenty of cars out there."
At Jim Glover Chevrolet, they don't know what to think about the rescue bill, either.
"There's nothing we can do."
Barnes says they have seen a drop in both new and used car sales, despite now being the time to buy.
"You know, every car salesman says this is the time to buy, but honestly and truly just look at the rebates on new cars. I don't care if it's a Chevy or what, it's a great time."
He hopes the bailout will at least help Big 3 dealerships get that confidence back -- confidence from customers like Kyle Turner. For now, he's sticking to the old.
So what now for the failed bailout? The Bush Administration has hinted it may step in, tapping the 700-billion bailout financial bailout fund to keep the industry from collapse.
