Christmas decorations line the building, but there is no holiday cheer at Arrow Trucking. "It caught me off by surprise today, I mean it was like an upper cut," said trucker David Creech.
Countless drivers are waiting in limbo for official word of the company’s fate, but sources tell News Channel 8 that Arrow has folded. Impact? Roughly 300 local jobs, with a fleet of truckers spread throughout the country.
"There’s about 1,000 drivers working for Arrow right now, somewhere in that neighborhood," said Creech.
Drivers who have been told to stay put until further notice, wherever they are. "My friend’s in north Little Rock and they can’t get fuel right now. I was talking to him two months ago and they were 30 miles from the Petrol, when they got there the cards had already been shut off," said trucker Pete Fuentes. Founded in 1948 by Jim Pielsticker, the company went to his son Doug after Jim died in a plane crash in 2001. Over the past few years, say long time employees, the business has been deteriorating, culminating most recently with payroll checks that bounced. This afternoon many employees cleaned out their desks, as drivers wondered what to do with their rigs. "I said, 'Can I take my truck home?' and she said, 'No, just put your truck here in the yard,' She said, 'Call me tomorrow,' I said, 'Why do you want me to call you tomorrow?' She said, 'We may not have jobs," said trucker Coby Wise, retelling his conversation with a company official. Shellshock, for hundreds of families, four days before Christmas "We’re stuck, we have no paycheck coming, we’re stuck," said another driver.We made several attempts to contact Arrow Trucking today but our calls were not answered.
Employees are expecting to learn more at an 8am meeting Tuesday morning.
