Cherokee County Commissioners Issue Burn Ban

Posted: Updated:

Weeks of heat and little or no rain have left parts of Oklahoma extremely dry and susceptible to dangerous fire conditions. And the effects are beginning to be felt.

Thursday morning Cherokee County Commissioners issued a Burn Ban Resolution for the entire county.

County commissioners deter minded, after consulting with city and county fire departments, that extreme fire conditions exist in the county

According to the burn ban resolution prohibited are, "...any person to set fire to any forest, grass, range, crop or other wildlands, or to build a campfire or bonfire or to burn trash or other materials that may cause a forest fire, grass, range or other wildlands fire."

Penalties for burning include up to a $500 fine and/or not more than one year in jail.

The next chance for rainfall doesn't come to the region until early next week.
