Papa Dia scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help lead Southern Methodist to a 64-57 overtime victory over Oral Roberts Wednesday night at the College Insider Tournament in Dallas.
The Mustangs trailed 57-54 with just over two minutes remaining when Dia knocked down a jumper to begin a 10-0 run to end the game. SMU would go on to hit all six of their free throw attempts over the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
ORU led early before SMU scored seven straight to take a 16-12 lead on Robert Nyakundi's 3-pointer with 6:40 left in the first half. The Mustangs would later lead by seven before ORU scored the final five points of the half, including a 3-pointer by Damen Bell-Holter with 54 seconds on the clock.
The Golden Eagles trailed again by five in the second half, but took their first lead of the half on Warren Niles' 3-pointer with 4:33 remaining that put ORU on top 46-45. The teams would trade the lead down the stretch and when Ken Holdman missed on a rebound and putback with four seconds left, overtime awaited.
Things looked promising for ORU when Dominique Morrison knocked down a jumper with 2:12 left in the extra period for a 57-54 lead. But, the Golden Eagles missed their last three shots and had to foul after SMU took the lead.
