Oilers Get Game One Win In OT

Posted: Updated:

Tom Dignard scored less than two minutes into overtime as the Tulsa Oilers took game one of their second round playoff series with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 5-4 Friday night in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Oilers and Mudbugs combined for eight goals in the first two periods before the defense took over in a scoreless third.

Bossier-Shreveport scored first, getting a Simon Mangos goal at the 10:31 mark of the first period, but the lead didn't last long. Less than a minute later, Tulsa's Bates Battaglia scored the first of his two goals to knot the score.

Jack Combs lit the lamp five minutes later to give the Oilers a 2-1 advantage after the first period.

The lead grew to 3-1 early in the second period when Luke Lucyk put one past Mudbug goalie Ryan Munce at the 6:41 mark. But, Bossier-Shreveport battled back, getting a powerplay goal from Jeff Kyrzakos and later another goal by David Rutherford to tie the game at 3-3.

Battaglia put Tulsa back in front with 2:01 left to play in the second period off the pass from Tyler Fleck, but the Mudbugs wasted no time in pulling even as Justin Aikins scored 21 seconds later.

In the overtime period, Aikins was called for hooking, giving the Oilers a man advantage. And, it paid off 40 seconds later when Dignard blasted one into the back of the net.

Tulsa won despite being outshot 41-30. Trevor Cann stopped 37 shots for the Oilers, who have now on four straight playoff games after losing the first two in their opening series against Mississippi.

Game two of the best-of-five series will be played Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at the CenturyTel Center in Shreveport.
