Aimee Creger tossed complete game and Shelby Blanton crushed a 2-run home run as Tulsa defeated UAB 2-1 Friday in the opener of an important doubleheader at TU's Hardesty Complex.
Creger struck out nine batters and gave up only a leadoff home run to Kate Armstrong in the top of the seventh inning that broke up the shutout.
Tulsa took the lead in the fourth on Blanton's line driver homer, her first of the season. Blanton had two of Tulsa's five hits on the day.
With the win, Creger improved to 18-and-2 and upped her single-season strikeout record to 197.
Game two is scheduled for later this afternoon. If Tulsa sweeps the doubleheader, the Golden Hurricane would take over sole possession of first place in Conference USA.
The two teams also play Saturday at noon.
