
The University of Tulsa swept the Conference USA tennis championships with both the men and women winning Sunday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa.
Sunday's rain forced the final round indoors.
The men won their fifth conference championship in six seasons, sweeping through all three rounds, including Sunday's championship, 4-0 against No. 2 seed Rice.
The Golden Hurricane took the doubles point with Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson defeating Peter Frank and Sam Garforth-Bles 8-5 and Marcelo Arevalo and Japie De Klerk winning 8-4 over Christian Saravia and Michael Nuesslein.
The team of Ashley Watling and Clifford Marsland was also winning 7-5 over Harry Fowler and Oscar Podlewski in an unfinished doubles match.
In singles action, Tulsa picked up victories by Arevalo, De Klerk and Marsland to finish off the victory.
The Golden Hurricane now turn their attention to the NCAA Tournament, which begins May 13th.
Ini women's action, Tulsa captured its fourth title in five years with a hard-fought 4-3 battle over SMU.
Tulsa won two of three doubles matches to earn the early 1-0 advantage. Ewa Szatkowska and Anastasia Erofeeva won 8-4 over Heather Steinbauer and Edyta Cieplucha. After SMU rallied to take the next match, Bonny Davidson and Sam Vickers posted an 8-4 victory in the third match to earn the point.
In singles play, SMU evened the score with ninth-ranked Marta Lesniak winning 6-3, 6-2 over Alexandra Kichoutkin.
TU's Michelle Farley put the Golden Hurricane back in front with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Steinbauer, but the Mustangs bounced back to tie with Cieplucha defeating Erofeeva 7-5, 6-2.
SMU took its first lead when Aleks Malyarchikova rallied to beat Szatkowska 2-6, 6-2 and 6-2.
With their backs against the wall, the Golden Hurricane came out swinging, getting a 6-4, 6-1 victory from Vickers to tie it up, then closing it out with Jo-Anne Karaitiana fighting back from a 5-7 setback in the first set to win 6-2 and 6-1.
This is the third time in five seasons that both the TU men and women have claimed conference titles in the same season. Like the men, the women will now advance to the NCAA Tournament, which begins next month.
