Cowboys Shocked In Overtime At Iowa State

Ames, IA -

The perfect season is over. On a day when thoughts had to be back in Stillwater following a tragic plane crash, second-ranked Oklahoma State suffered its worst game of the season, falling 37-31 in two overtimes at Iowa State.

After an interception ended OSU's possession in the second overtime, the Cyclones put the ball on the ground, getting a four-yard run by Jeff Woody that sent the crowd in Ames into a frenzy.

Turnovers and missed opportunities plagued the Cowboys (10-1) all night. Oklahoma State was held to a three and out on its opening possession, then its next two ended with a fumble by Joseph Randle and an interception.

Finally, late in the first quarter, the defense got in on the act when Shawn Lewis intercepted a pass and rumbled 70 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

It was 10-0 when Iowa State put together a drive to reach the end zone on a 16-yard pass from Jared Barnett to Darius Reynolds.

The Cowboys responded with an 8-play, 75-yard drive that culminated with a 27-yard leaping touchdown catch by Justin Blackmon and added a Brandon Weeden to Tracy Moore touchdown pass on the opening drive of the second half for a 24-7 advantage.

But, Iowa State cut the lead to 24-14 on a 32-yard touchdown run by James White and tacked on a field goal after a second fumble by Randle. Then, a long drive late in the fourth resulted in a Barnett to Albert Gray touchdown pass with 5:30 remaining to knot the score.

An Alex Elkins interception with 3:17 remaining and a horsecollar tackle gave the Cowboys a chance, but a 37-yard field goal attempt by Quinn Sharp sailed over the goalpost and officials called it no good.

In the first overtime, Iowa State scored on its first play on a 25-yard pass from Barnett to White. OSU responded with a six yard pass from Weeden to Josh Cooper.

But, in the second extra period, Weeden's pass intended for Blackmon over the middle was tipped and intercepted by Ter'Ran Benton, setting up the final drive. Woody took all three carries and scored on the third.

The Cowboys committed five turnovers in the game after entering with just 16 all season. The shocker brings an end to Oklahoma State's perfect season and puts the national championship picture in a complete mess.

Oklahoma State is dealing with tragedy that struck its athletics program Thursday with the deaths of women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna in a plane crash in Arkansas.

Before tonight's kickoff, the players gathered at midfield and a moment of silence was observed.
