Upon further review, officials made the right call when saying Oklahoma State kicker Quinn Sharp's 37-yard field goal attempt with 1:17 remaining was no good.
According to the NCAA rule book, on a field goal in which the ball sails higher than the goalposts, "the entire ball must pass to the inside of the inside edge of the upright, extended indefinitely above the top of the upright."
Fans and players were stunned when officials nullified Sharp's kick, which appeared to travel directly over the top of the right upright.
If Sharp had been playing in the NFL, the rules are a little less stringent, saying that "the entire ball must pass to the inside of the outside edge of the upright".
The field goal could have kept Oklahoma State unbeaten and controlling their own destiny when it comes to making the national championship game. Instead, it left the game tied and Iowa State pulled out the 37-31 win in double overtime.
The loss sends another college football season into the final weeks with plenty up in the air.
Oklahoma State gets next week off before hosting Bedlam on December third. The game will be played at 7 p.m. and can be seen on Tulsa's Channel 8.
