Big Second Half Propels TU Women To Mayor's Cup Victory

Posted: Updated:

The TU women's basketball team erased an eight-point second half deficit to earn a 65-57 victory over crosstown rival Oral Roberts Tuesday night in the annual Mayor's Cup game at the Reynolds Center.

After ORU (5-2) took an eight-point lead on a 3-pointer by Kevi Luper one minute into the second half, Tulsa responded, going on a 15-to-1 run over the next six minutes.

Chanice Scott's 3-pointer with 12:47 remaining gave the Golden Hurricane a 39-33 advantage. ORU cut the lead to three on a pair of free throws by Savanna Buck with 5:28 left to go, but they'd get no closer.

Taleya Mayberry scored 18 points to lead Tulsa while Scott added 17 points and nine rebounds and Tiffani Cousinard had eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Luper led Oral Roberts with 32 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

The win gives TU (2-3) two straight wins in the mayor's cup series after the Golden Eagles had won four straight from 2006 to 2009.

The Golden Hurricane next plays Saturday afternoon at Utah Valley. Oral Roberts also plays Saturday, hosting Southern Utah at 2:05 p.m.
